Everyone has a favorite type of client or customer. For my mentor, Mike Smith, the very successful person was his. Currently Western governments neglect the successful person and milk him or her to give the fruits of their labor to people who don’t even try. This is backwards and gives a declining civilization. Nobody is more deserving of help than the man or woman who is achieving success.
You Mean Success Can Be a Problem?
The unsuccessful person or moderate, plodding success looks up at the successful person and sees a problem-free state. It’s hard to envision what could be wrong when you have money and all the toys. But the successful person is inundated with problems. They’re usually better problems than how to avoid starving, but still have to be dealt with effectively.
One problem is the volume of communication. The successful owner of a rapidly-growing company told me that just returning all the calls he gets and saying, “I’ll call you back,” and hanging up would be a full-time job. Booming entrepreneurs routinely have email inboxes piled so high that it would overwhelm the average person. And an increasing amount arrives tomorrow!
A key issue is time. At Expansion Consultants in Los Angeles we had a brochure with a nighttime photo of a tall office building with one lonely light on. The title was, “Does the cleaning crew go home before you do?” Mike Smith used to ask, “When is the last time you had dinner with your family?” It doesn’t have to be a choice between success and quality of life, but it can sure look that way, and without effective help to unsnarl the situation, many successful people suffer for years, divorce isn’t pretty, kids squander Dad’s dough.
Making Your Dreams Come True
To compound this, the successful person typically has dreams far beyond their current operation. Yet they get trapped into the day-to-day grind and never get to their dreams.
Their creation of a future that others don’t yet envision is one of their most valuable contributions.
You Can’t Get Good Help?
Another issue is getting good help. While there are people out there looking for jobs, an amazing number of them are not perfect! An almost equally amazing number create more problems than they solve. The one who can come in and offer immediate solutions with very little groove-in is rare.
Early in my consulting career I decided that I needed to master marketing, so instead of going to my nearest ivory tower university and take some more courses in it, I decided to learn “on the street” the way it was really done. So I applied to be the Production Control Manager in a Beverly Hills ad agency.
At the appointed time the Director of Marketing was very apologetic, but he couldn’t speak with me for an hour because he had a deadline he had to meet and he was behind the 8-ball. This, of course, was why he was looking for help.
So I just skipped the interview and asked him what needed to get done, sat down at a computer and started knocking it out. In half an hour we were finished, deadline met, and I had the job! I eventually worked my way up to Director of Marketing and he was working for me.
Steve Jobs at Apple considered it one of his most important functions to find the right people to come to work for Apple.
Apple is now one of the most solvent and admired companies on the planet. It looks like there’s something to getting good help! So it CAN be done! Just remember that when all looks black.
